Terms of Service
Last updated: 2 May 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of SkinID, a Swiss authentication service ("SkinID", "we", "our") at skinid.ch and through our browser extension and native applications. The service is operated by its founder pending the incorporation of SkinID Sàrl, at which point the company will assume these Terms. By creating a SkinID account or using any part of the service, you agree to these Terms.
1. The service
SkinID is a hardware-bound authentication service that lets you use a subdermal NFC cryptographic implant (or a compatible NFC tag) to:
- Save and autofill website credentials (usernames, passwords)
- Generate and use FIDO2 / WebAuthn passkeys
- Authenticate to physical and digital systems via your implant
The service consists of a Swiss-hosted server, a web management panel at skinid.ch/management, a browser extension (Chrome), and native applications for macOS, Windows, and iOS.
SkinID is currently in a prototype / early-access phase. Features may change, and the service is provided to early users with the understanding that it is under active development.
2. Eligibility and account
- You must be at least 18 years old to create a SkinID account.
- You are responsible for the security of your implant and any device that has been authorised to act on its behalf (paired bridges, signed-in browsers, mobile apps).
- You may create only one personal SkinID account per implant.
- You agree to provide accurate information during account setup and to keep your contact details up to date for security notifications.
3. Hardware and implantation
SkinID is designed for use with DESFire EV3 NFC cryptographic chips, including compatible subdermal implants. The implant itself is manufactured by third-party suppliers and is not produced by SkinID.
The implantation procedure (if applicable) must be performed by a qualified professional and is entirely your decision and responsibility. SkinID does not perform implantation, does not provide medical advice, and is not liable for any consequences of the implantation procedure, including but not limited to infection, rejection, displacement, or removal.
SkinID is not a medical device and is not certified by any health authority (FDA, EMA, or Swissmedic). It is offered as a body modification and authentication product. Always inform your radiologist of the implant before any MRI or imaging procedure.
4. Acceptable use
You agree NOT to:
- Use SkinID to store, transmit, or facilitate any unlawful, fraudulent, or harmful activity
- Use SkinID to authenticate to systems you are not authorised to access
- Reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract the source code of our applications beyond what is permitted by Swiss law
- Probe, scan, or test the security of our infrastructure without prior written permission (responsible disclosure: support@skinid.ch)
- Resell, sublicense, or commercially redistribute SkinID without a written agreement
- Use SkinID in connection with safety-critical systems (medical devices, life-support, nuclear, aviation, or similar)
5. Your responsibilities and assumption of risk
You acknowledge and accept that:
- You are solely responsible for safeguarding your implant, your recovery methods, and any device or session you authorise. We are not liable for any loss resulting from your sharing of access, failure to revoke a lost or compromised device, or authorisation of a malicious or untrusted device.
- You are responsible for maintaining your own recovery methods. We are not liable for loss of access or data resulting from your deletion of your account, loss of all your recovery methods, or removal, damage, or physical failure of your implant.
- As SkinID is in an early-access phase, you accept that features may change or fail, and you assume the risk of relying on the service for any access you consider important. We recommend exporting your credentials regularly.
- SkinID depends on third-party systems (websites, lock systems, devices, operating systems). We are not liable if any of these stop supporting NFC, passkeys, or otherwise change in a way that affects SkinID functionality.
6. Pricing and pre-launch tiers
SkinID is currently in pre-launch. During this phase, we offer optional paid tiers (Pioneer and Pioneer Plus) that reserve early access and benefits ahead of public launch.
- Payments for paid tiers are collected only after SkinID Sàrl is officially incorporated.
- Full terms of sale, including delivery timelines and refund conditions, are presented before any payment.
- A full refund is available if your implant is not shipped by the indicated date.
The core authentication service is otherwise provided free of charge for personal use during the early-access phase. Future paid plans or enterprise tiers may be introduced; you will be notified before any charge is applied to your account, and continued use of paid features will require explicit acceptance of pricing.
7. Service availability
We aim to keep SkinID available at all times but make no guarantee of uninterrupted service. The service may be temporarily unavailable for maintenance, security updates, or reasons beyond our control. We are not liable for inability to authenticate during such periods.
You can mitigate dependency on the service by exporting your credentials regularly from the Account section of the management panel.
8. Privacy and data protection
Your privacy is governed by our Privacy Policy, which forms part of these Terms. By using SkinID you confirm you have read and understood that policy.
9. Intellectual property
SkinID, the SkinID name, the logo, and all associated trademarks, designs, and source code are the property of its founder (and of SkinID Sàrl or its assignees upon incorporation). You receive a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to use the service and the official client applications for personal authentication. Nothing in these Terms grants you ownership of any SkinID intellectual property.
You retain full ownership of the credentials, passkeys, and metadata you store in SkinID.
10. Disclaimers
SkinID is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranty of any kind, express or implied, to the maximum extent permitted by Swiss law. We do not warrant that the service will be error-free, secure against every conceivable threat, or fit for any particular purpose. We do not warrant the integrity of any third-party website or application that you authenticate to using SkinID.
As an early-access product under active development, SkinID may contain limitations or defects that are typical of a prototype phase, and you accept this when choosing to use it.
11. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, SkinID and its operator shall not be liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or exemplary damages, including but not limited to loss of profits, data, use, goodwill, or other intangible losses, arising out of or in connection with your use of (or inability to use) the service.
Our total aggregate liability for any direct damages shall not exceed the greater of (a) the total amount you have paid to us in the twelve months preceding the event giving rise to the claim, or (b) one hundred Swiss francs (CHF 100).
Nothing in these Terms excludes liability for gross negligence, intentional misconduct, death or personal injury caused by negligence, or any liability that cannot lawfully be excluded under Swiss law.
12. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless SkinID and its operator from any claim, demand, loss, or expense (including reasonable legal fees) brought by a third party and arising out of your misuse of the service, your breach of these Terms, or your use of SkinID to access systems you are not authorised to access.
13. Force majeure
We are not liable for any failure or delay in providing the service resulting from circumstances beyond our reasonable control, including but not limited to cyberattacks, data-centre or hosting-provider outages, supplier failures, internet or network failures, regulatory or legal changes, natural disasters, or other events of force majeure.
14. Termination
You may terminate your SkinID account at any time from the management panel; this deletes all your stored credentials, passkeys, and personal data. We may suspend or terminate your access to the service if you breach these Terms, if required by law, or if we discontinue the service. Upon termination, sections that by their nature should survive (intellectual property, disclaimers, limitation of liability, indemnification, governing law) will remain in effect.
15. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms as the service evolves. The “last updated” date at the top reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be communicated to active accounts (via the management panel banner or email if provided). Continued use of SkinID after a change constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
16. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the laws of Switzerland, excluding its conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising out of or in connection with these Terms shall be submitted to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of the canton in which the service operator is domiciled, subject to mandatory consumer-protection rules in your country of residence.
